This plug-in module for SMART Scaffolder provides an essential TG20:08 compliance check; including calculation of the safe height and the required ties. TG20:08 check results are displayed on-screen in real time or in a detailed printed report.

NEW check IT + addresses many design issues currently outside of the scope of the TG20:08 'Basic Scaffold check' thus proving even more (typical) scaffolds fully comply with the latest guidance without the expense of an engineer's fees!

check IT brochure

In 2009 the NASC published TG20:08, its new guidance on the use of the European Standard BS EN12811, applying to all UK tube and fitting scaffolding, from basic to the most complex scaffolding structures.  The HSE web site states:
"Unless a scaffold is a basic configuration described in recognised guidance e.g. NASC Technical Guidance TG20 for tube and fitting scaffolds or manufacturers’ guidance for system scaffolds, the scaffold should be designed by calculation, by a competent person, to ensure it will have adequate strength and stability."
The check IT module automatically produces a printable TG20:08 report as you enter scaffold data, justifying whether the scaffold can be designated as a ‘Basic Scaffold’ and therefore that it does not need to be designed by an Engineer.

TG20 Appendix H Document

1st February 2010 - TG20:08 Appendix H
TG20:08 assumes that the building facade is impermeable and only has a small number of openings. For scaffolds tied to open frameworks or facades where there are a high percentage of openings the scaffold will be subjected to higher wind loading and should therefore be designed. The safe heights for unclad scaffolds are given in Table 2 of TG20:08, but the tie duties in Table 2 apply only to scaffolds attached to impermeable facades which shield them from the wind.
Appendix 'H' has been produced to give guidance on how to determine the correct tie duty when tying scaffolding to permeable open structures using the tie patterns detailed in TG20.

TG20 Wind Factor

In SMART Scaffolder check IT you can quickly determine the wind factor for your site from the site postcode.  Picking the relevant site conditions, such as terrain and position relative to the coast, a hillside etc. is simple and quick.
If the Basic Scaffold criteria are met SMART Scaffolder check IT automatically calculates the maximum safe height of your scaffold as you enter it and warns you if it is exceeded.  The safe height is automatically recalculated when the inside board loading is adjusted.
check IT automatically works out the TG20:08 scaffold designation and uses it to calculate the number of transoms that you need.  SMART Scaffolder check IT also helps you by recommending the load class and the maximum safe load for your scaffold based on the usage you specify.

 Scaffold tie pattern

check IT ensures that scaffold estimates comply with the new TG20:08 bracing patterns. Façade bracing is now placed across two bays in accordance with the preferred option in TG20:08 at an interval of every six bays. However, users can choose to place it across a single bay if required. SMART Scaffolder check IT will also prompt the user when plan bracing is required. Ledger bracing is also automatically compliant with TG20:08, being placed around façade-braced bays and following the maximum spacing rules.
SMART Scaffolder also estimates the number of ties required automatically, including the ties required for sheeting and pavement lifts. If the ‘Basic Scaffold’ criteria are satisfied  check IT calculates the required tie duty, advising on the required strength of the ties (light duty, medium duty or heavy duty) and whether extra ties are required.

Many companies and individuals are affected by and will be interested in learning more about the TG20:08 requirements and technical guidance. With this in mind CADS has produced a useful guide to working with TG20:08 which has proved popular not just with Scaffolders but also main contractors, local authorities and property managers with responsibility for procuring building and maintenance work. The CADS guide also explains how easy it can be to achieve compliance with TG20:08 if you use SMART Scaffolder software.
